There are dozens of services available that are capable of checking.your website for errors and finding ways of improving your web page. Below is a listing of some of our favorite free online services.
General website and HTML checks
- Silktide Nibbler– Fantastic free online service that gives you a good complete overview of your website with an overall score.
- Feng-GUI– Great service that allows you to upload a picture of your home page or other pages and generate a heat map of where the visitor’s eyes are most likely to go first.
- W3C markup validation– The source to go to check HTML, XHTML or other markup language you use on your web page for errors.
- Google Webmaster Tools– A must for any Webmaster. With this free service you can identify any page or links with errors, scan for malware, find pages with short or missing titles, find duplicate meta tags, and much more.
- IE NetRender– Great online service that allows you to see how your page is displayed in different versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer. This is really helpful if you need to test your web page in an older browser such as IE6, which had a lot of compatibility and other issues with CSS.
- HTML Tidy– Simple and easy to use online tool that allows you to identify any HTML errors you may have on your page.
- Feed– This is the W3C Feed Validation Service, a free service that checks the syntax of Atom or RSS feeds.You can validate by URL or Validate by direct input.
- Unicorn– Checks your site for all the general standards and see if there are rooms to improvement. It checks for the XHTML and CSS compatibility.
- HTML Validator– The WDG HTML Validator is similar in many ways to the W3C HTML Validation Service. Most of the previous differences between the two validators have disappeared with recent development of the W3C validator. The errors reported are the same in virtually all cases.
- Dr. Watson’s site validation check– Dr. Watson is a free service to analyze your web page on the Internet. Just give the URL of your page and Watson will get a copy of it directly from the web server. Watson can also check out many other aspects of your site, including link validity, download speed, search engine compatibility, and link popularity. It rolls many features into one, so if you are looking for a single stop for checks, this one is the place to be.
- XML well checker and validator– Use this form to check an XML document for well-formetness and (optionally) validity. External entity references are included, even when not validating.It checks for spaces and syntax errors, while pointing to the line number at which the error was spotted.
- Robots checker– This tool checks if yourRobots.txtfile is valid. Thought it may show some exclusions you’ve done as errors, they are good pointers to check if the commands will be misinterpreted or not. Good one and it is simple,powerful and accurate one.
- URL checker– While it’s important to know if your website is running and your host is providing a good service, it’s even more important to be proactive about getting it back online fast so you don’t lose search engine position, miss out on possible revenue or blow.InternetSupervision™is a service that monitors the availability of HTML, FTP, SMTP, POP3 email servers), supervises the performance of website and e-commerce transactions (including website forms) and provides website content supervision (cyber-attack monitoring).
- Web page reports– There are various online services offering automated web page checks. pinkjuice.com/check is just a simple tool generating links to the report pages of some of those services, including emulators, validators, and accessibility checkers.And it’s handy to have a list of all the results pages, for example when sending a status report to a client about a website that’s being worked on.
CSS checking
- W3C CSS validation service– Fantastic service that will display any issues errors or compliance warnings you have with any CSS code.
- CSS Compressor– Although not a service to validate for errors this is a great tool to use after your CSS code has been verified. Using this tool you can shrink your CSS file to help the overall load time of every page that links to the .CSS file and decrease the overall amount of bandwidth you use.
Speed test
- WebPagetest– Our favorite tool for testing a web pages load time.
- Pingdom Tools– Fantastic service that gives you a good and easy to read overview of how long it takes for something to load on your web page. Keep in mind most web site visitors only spend a few seconds on each page they visit.
- WebSiteOptimization– Another great service to find how much time it takes to load your web page and what you can do to help decrease the overall time it takes to load it.
- Web Page Content Compression Verification– Great tool to test an individual page or element on the page (such as a .CSS or .JS file) to see if it’s being compressed before being sent usinggzip.
- Global load time performance test– Test your webpage load times around the world.
- Load Impact– A great online test for verifying your website will perform well under high traffic volumes.
Accessibility
- Browsershots– Excellent online tool to test how accessible your web page is in all of the Internet browsers.
- Colorblind filter– Fantastic page to see how your page would look to someone who has colorblindness. This is an easy way to make sure that someone with colorblindness whose visiting your site is not going to miss something because your color scheme is bad.
- HERA– Great page to verify if everyone regardless of any disability can view your page they may have.
- html2txt– A great method of converting your HTML page into a text document. This is helpful because many accessibility tools for the blind will convert pages to text, using this tool you can get a good idea how someone who’s blind may read your page.
- The Readability Test Tool– Quick and easy way to test the readability of your website and get a better idea about how many people would understand your content.
- Webaccessibility checker-This tool checks single HTML pages for conformance with accessibility standards to ensure the content can be accessed by everyone. See the Handbook link to the upper right for more about the Web Accessibility Checker.
- Color contrast–AccessColortests the color contrast and color brightness between the foreground and background of all elements in theDOMto make sure that the contrast is high enough for people with visual impairments. AccessColor will find the relevant color combination within your HTML and CSS documents rather than requiring you to find each value to input yourself in order to test the contrast between each color combination.
- Web accessibily evaluation tool-WAVE– WAVE is a free web accessibility evaluation tool provided byWebAIM. It is used to aid humans in the web accessibility evaluation process. Rather than providing a complex technical report, WAVE shows the original web page with embedded icons and indicators that reveal the accessibility of that page.
- FAE – Functional Accessibility Evaluator– Use this tool to evaluate the functional accessibility of a single web page. It evaluate multiple pages via web crawling,Generate a Sitewide Report that identifies problem pages,Save reports in an account-specific Archived Reports list.
- Accessibility with style–HERAis a tool to check the accessibility of Web pages according to the specification Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. HERA performs a preliminary set of tests on the page and identifies any automatically detectable errors or checkpoints met, and which checkpoints need further manual verification.
- Section 508-The Section 508 checking tool automatically compares your HTML code against Section 508 checklist and shows your results quickly. Results are simple to understand too.
Mobile-readiness
- mobiReady– By far the best site and service for checking how compatible your website or blog is when being viewed on a mobile device. This service not only gives you detailed information on why your website may or may not work but also gives live demos on how the page will load on different mobile devices.

- Pingdom tools– The Full Page Test loads a complete HTML page including all objects (images, CSS, JavaScripts, RSS, Flash and frames/iframes). It mimics the way a page is loaded in a web browser.The load time of all objects is shown visually with time bars.
- Webpage analyzer

Cross Browser Testing

- Nibbler– Nibbler is not only a great service to give you an overall rating on your website but also provides you with an extensive report of was to improve your overall site rating.
- Alexa–Another great service that allows you to not only view traffic ratings and information over time but also allows you to compare your site or blog with others. This is an easy method to compare how your site is doing against your competition.
- URL Appraisal– Finally, why not take pride in how much your web site is worth with the URL appraisal service. This service takes into account several different factors such as the age of the domain, the Google PageRank, traffic details, and search engine links to calculate what the estimated value of your site is.
Vulnerabilities checker
- Sucuri SiteCheck– It appears to scan the page that you enter, and the pages linked off of that page. The results indicate whether the site has been blacklisted by Google Safe Browsing, Norton Safe Web, or Phish tank. It also lets you know whether malware, malicious javascript, or malicious iFrames were detected. Finally, it tests for drive-by-downloads (downloads that happen without your knowledge or intent), anomalies, Internet Explorer-only attacks, suspicious redirections, and spam. The service is free.
- HackerTarget.com – The second tool is actually a suite of scans fromHackerTarget.com. From the front page of that site, you’ll find links to 12 different scans that can be performed.The scans range from a port scan, to an SQL injection test, to scans for different types of platforms (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla).
